Promised Neverland
Contemporary Chinese are lonely, isolated individuals struggling to find a sense of belonging. As our bodies become marionettes in a society of rigid stratification and heavy industrialization, we often feel we belong elsewhere—a promised neverland—an intangible hometown. Like fish in tree roots, we are alienated from our souls.
The fish might be born among tree roots and rebars, but their home is the sea. Misplaced, they live and grow among scaffolded tubes symbolizing unbreakable laws, and tree roots representing class solidification. Despite their living flesh, the fish’s eyes are hollow. We look into them and wonder, “How
do they imagine the sea?”
